We will use the following text:
Fundamentals of Physics (5th ed) by
Halliday, Resnick and Walker, J. Wiley, 1997. ISBN
0-471-10558-9.
This is the 5th edition of a classic text which has been around
for a long time. The book is well-written and up-to-date. The
problems are many and excellent. There are some excellent resources
which accompany the book for teachers including detailed problem
solutions (in book form and as a CD-ROM) and a bank of test
questions.
Here are the accompanying books for students:
- A Student's Companion by J. Richard
Christman (ISBN 0-471-15960-6)
- A Student's Pocket Companion by J.
Richard Christman (ISBN 0-471-09675-X)
- A Student's Solution Manual by J.
Richard Christman (ISBN 0-471-15526-8) - this book has
solutions for only a selected set of problems - the Teacher's
Solutions Manual has solutions for all the problems.
A
companion CD-ROM is also available which presents the entire text -
with illustrations - along with interactive problem solving. It is
available for PC and Mac.
I also recommend:
- Used Math (2nd ed) by Clifford Swartz,
American Association of Physics Teachers, 1993. ISBN
0-917853-50-4. This is great for the student who
needs a quick explanation of the mathematics you need in
introductory physics. It is also great for the instructor.
- Turning the World Inside Out and 174
Other Simple Physics Demonstrations by Robert Ehrlich, Princeton
Paperbacks, 1990. ISBN 0-691-02395-6. This book describes
lots of neat demonstrations, most of which you can do with things
found in your home.
- Why Toast Lands Jelly-Side Down by
Robert Ehrlich, Princeton Paperbacks, 1990. ISBN
0-691-02887-7. More of the same - excellent.
