Departmental Colloquium: Konopinski Lecture Series

March 3, 2004

4:00 pm in Swain West 119
Tea at 3:30 pm in SW113

Speaker:  Dr. Jan Tobochnik, Kalamazoo College

Title:   Using computer simulations to understand concepts in statistical physics

Abstract:   The discussion of computer simulation algorithms and models is useful for helping students understand concepts in thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and many topics in the study of complex systems. I will discuss the "Demon algorithm" as a means for understanding temperature and chemical potential, simulations of granular matter as a means for learning about internal energy, and models of networks and percolation as a way of understanding the importance of power laws in complex systems.
