Laboratory: Tuesday 2:30-4:25 pm in Swain West 102
topics

Physical optics and electromagnetic waves based on electromagnetic theory: wave equations; phase and group velocity; dispersion; coherence, interference, diffraction, and polarization of light and of electromagnetic radiation generally; wave guides; holography; masers and lasers; introduction to optical spectroscopy.

textbook Optics E. Hecht, Optics, Addison-Wesley, 4th ed., 2002.

For the lab section, a logbook is required. It must be bound, and the pages must be cross-hatched and numbered. We recommend type #43-64x (or equivalent), available, e.g., at the IU bookstore.

Here is list of useful text and reference books .

logbook

One of the most difficult things to learn, yet one of the most important for future success in physics research, is mastering the "art" of maintaining a proper log book. Please read, and then adhere to the following Log Book Rules

organization

The topics of the week will be posted on the web under "curriculum", accessible from the home page). This is also where you find homework and reading assignements. Homework will be assigned each Wednesday, and is due the following Monday, except in weeks preceeding an exam. Reading will be assigned also on Wednesdays, to be completed before class on Monday. There will be two in-class exams and a final comprehensive exam. The final grade will be based on performance on homework, exams, and labs (in particular your logbook) (see below).

final exam The final exam will take place on Friday, May 5, 7:15 pm, in Swain West 102
course grade Your course grade will be based on your:
  • homework (15%)
  • Exam 1 (15%)
  • Exam 2 (15%)
  • Final exam (15%)
  • Labs, logbook (40%)
