Reflections and Thoughts

Monday 6/11/01

Well, since I am not in the dorm I got here about 8:15. Big lectuer in the morning. I learned and was lost. Later worked with the angles. Big calculations. Big pain.

Listened more on the lovely Standard Model. Lots of overheads. Then I worked on my website. Problem with the angles in our calculations. Vewing area too big. Need to add another scintillation plate, so we need to redo our equations. Drat. Went down to electronics lab to learn how to plateau. Unfortunately, they had a problem so I had to wait. And wait. Now it looks like I'll be doing it tomorrow. Oh well. We have tons of equations on the board. Nice documentation. Only problem is we had to add an extra scintillator to the detector. Bummer. At least I got to go wall climbing. It was scary at first, but I got used to it.

I am tired this morning.  First we had a lovely lecture on electronics. Big writings on board. We had to come up with the actual research projects today. I have the basic idea of my project here. We all had a small problem with the Poisson values for the cosmic shower energies. Still not solved. At least we know our research projects. Had to think a lot.

I am tired today also. The morning's lecture was both stimulating and colorful. Launching sensors from big balloons is big fun. So now we are to fix the Poisson (really should be poison) values. It appears to be a theoretical error, but it could be a mathmetical one. Or it could be just one of the many sine errors we keep making. (he he) Tomorrow is FermiLab! (yay!)

Now here's some 2002 stuff:

I have returned. The QuarkNet summer workshop 2002 has begun. I miss the old days of the theory group. It was so much more....into physics. I have spent the past fews days trying to figure out a database. It's not easy. Let me explain....

We have data that comes like this, from TestPoint (after Jason tweeks it a little)
Site IU,15958553.4299999,7.353515625
Site IU,15958556.29,7.3486328125
Site IU,15958558.05,7.353515625
Site IU,15958559.6900001,7.3486328125
Site IU,15958564.14,7.353515625
Site IU,15958778.08,7.34375
Site IU,15958779.78,7.3486328125
Site IU,15958802.3,1.2548828125
Site IU,15958804.28,1.25
Site IU,15958805.16,1.2548828125

We have to import it into Access (otherwise known as the Angry Access God). That requires a macro. Macros are silly.
Here's a pic of the dudes and I working:

We had to use Visual Basic for the modules to get a specific sequence of events. Here. I will give you the sequence:
Testpoint: Turns on the PMT and puts the data in a list
Visual Basic: FTP's the server
Access: Imports the data
Puts it in a nice viewable format
Appends the data every 15 min. (at least)
Well, that's how it's supposed to happen. It's a tedious process. Very tedious. That's why we have Frank:

See. This is Frank.
